Abstract:

Background & Aim: Given the high cost of medical treatment to control the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and the resulted numerous complications, the use of Complementary Therapy has been increased by these patients. This study aims to determine the status of complimentary Therapy in patients with MS who refer to MS Association in Tehran in 2008.Material & Methods: It was a descriptive cross- sectional study. Two hundred patients with MS were recruited by convenience sampling. Data was collected by a researcher made questionnaire using face-to-face interviews and analyzed by descriptive and inferential (Chi-square and ANOVA) statistics using SPSS-PC (v.11.5).Results: More than half of sample (60%) has used complimentary Therapy. All of them had used nonpharmacological treatment as a supplement and not as a replacement to Therapy. The most frequently used methods were exercise, meditation, nutrition Therapy, herbal medicines, energy Therapy, acupuncture and acupressure respectively. The results also showed that the majority of participants (44.5%) have used one nonpharmacological method and just 11.5% have used two methods or more. The findings showed that there is o significant relationship between using complimentary Therapy and demographic characteristics of patients except for educational level (P=0.04).Conclusion: Regarding the widespread use of Complementary Therapy by patients with MS, these patients are exposed to potential risks and side effects of the treatments. So it is recommended that patients be provided with necessary training. Doing more research on the methods of complimentary Therapy and assessment of the reasons for tendency to this type of treatment is also recommended.

Abstract:

The present study was conducted to determine the protective influences of Ferulago angulata aqueous extract against testicular ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in rats. Twenty-eight subjects were assigned randomly into four groups: (I) sham group, (II) torsion/detorsion (T/D) group, (III) T/D followed by treatment with F. angulata (200 mg/kg, IP), (IV) intact group with only 200 mg/kg F. angulata. T/D damage was induced by 2 hours of testis rotation 720° followed by 24 hours of reperfusion injury. After reperfusion period, biochemical and hormonal parameters were measured in the serum, epididymal sperms were collected for evaluation of sperm characteristics (count, motility, viability, and abnormal morphology rate), and testes were studied histopathologically. I/R injury was associated with significant reduction in count, viability, and all sperm kinematic parameters (p < 0.05), which could be reversed significantly by F. angulata (p < 0.05) (except for some kinematic parameters). Although the abnormal morphology rate of sperms was numerically higher in the T/D group in comparison to the sham and intact groups; the difference was not statistically significant. Histopathological assessments showed that F. angulata could significantly increase the Johnsen’s score, mean seminiferous tubular diameter, and germinal epithelial cell thickness in the treatment group compared to the T/D group (p < 0.05). GPx, SOD, and testosterone were significantly reduced following torsion/detorsion compared to the sham group (p < 0.05); and the reductions were prevented significantly by F. angulata (p < 0.05) (except for SOD). MDA level was significantly increased in the T/D group in comparison to the sham and intact groups (p < 0.05), which F. angulata was not able to reverse peroxidation index. The overall results of the research suggest that F. angulata extract can be a good natural alternative to testicular I/R injury.

Abstract:

Introduction: Insomnia in older people results from aging and declining body function. However, no studies have identified the proper Therapy to reduce insomnia in older adults.  Objective: This study aimed to examine the Complementary therapies commonly used to lessen insomnia in older adults.  Materials and Methods: A systematic review was conducted based on PRISMA (the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses), and quantitative and randomized controlled trials were searched in PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, Lilacs, SciELO, DOAJ, ProQuest, and GARUDA. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the EPHPP QAT (the effective public health practice project for quality assessment tool) for quantitative studies. Only studies of moderate and strong quality were included.  Results: We analyzed 11 studies with a sample of 2495 older people. The significance of therapeutic effects on elderly insomnia had a strong influence with a P of 0.05 and Cohen’s kappa of 0.80 in four studies. We identified 11 articles that found Complementary therapies appropriate and recommended in reducing insomnia in older adults, including Tai Chi, cognitive behavior Therapy, lavender aroma, and digital cognitive Therapy. The results of the insomnia score were more than 50% positive changes, without adverse effects, including improvement in sleep efficiency (57%), total sleep time (60%), and insomnia rating scale score (75%). Conclusion: The application of Complementary Therapy has put forward alternative treatments for older adults to reduce insomnia problems, improve their quality of life, and enhance the qualifications of nurses in other applied fields.

Abstract:

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a pervasive public health concern characterized by compulsive drug use despite adverse consequences. SUD treatment strategies aim to assist addicts in ending their obsessive drug-seeking and consumption. These approaches could be provided in a variety of venues utilizing a range of behavioral and pharmacological techniques. Emerging research explores alternative treatments for SUD, including medicinal plants. Quercetin, a natural flavonoid present in various fruits and vegetables, exhibits promising pharmacological properties. This naturally occurring pharmaceutical component has shown promise as a preventative measure against a wide range of disorders. It shields against neurodegeneration, oxidative stress, and inflammation, offering hope for central nervous system-related disorders. In terms of substance abuse, quercetin shows substantial promise. It demonstrates the ability to mitigate the adverse effects of substances, including methamphetamine, nicotine, morphine, heroin, and alcohol, through various mechanisms, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective pathways. This review synthesizes recent evidence supporting quercetin as a Complementary approach to conventional addiction treatments.
